We started off today with a visit to the Information Office where they have a theatrette which shows a film on the history of Croydon. Then we went to the Croydon Heritage Precinct which has the Police Sergeants Residence (c.1897), the Police Station (c. 1896), Croydon Courthouse (c. 1887) and the Town Hall (c. 1890). All these buildings are quite well kept, our favourite was the Court unfortunately the sound system wasn't working but the woodwork in there was incredible. In the town there is a Datum Post Tree, the dead Cooktown Ironwood tree was used as a reference for the original survey of the town. After lunch went down to the railway station where we saw the Gulflander train come in. This train comes into Croydon every Wednesday afternoon stays overnight and then returns to Normanton. The first rail on the Normanton-Croydon railway station was lade in 1888. To lower construction costs and to defeat the termites of the Gulf, steel sleepers designed by Queensland Rail were used. Our next stop was Lake Belmore which is about 4km out of town then on the way back into town we stopped at the lookout. Croydon is a nice town and very proud of its history. The people are all very friendly.
